Eli Manning; The NFL's most overrated QB

OVER-RATED! Clap, clap, clap-clap-clap!
Coming out of Ole Miss, Eli Manning was drafted number one overall by the San Diego Chargers but was quickly traded to the New York Giants after saying he would never play for San Diego and all but demanded the trade.

The rumor was he wanted to go to New York to take greater advantage of endorsements in the country's biggest city, hoping to capitalize on his already famous last name. Manning has since managed to win a Super Bowl, "earn" millions, and make a trip to the Pro Bowl.

And thus begun the poor decision making of Eli Manning.

All of this has lead him to believe he's actually a great QB, culminating recently in his own delusional claims of being on the same level as Tom Brady.

At this point it's clear Eli Manning is the most overrated Quarterback in the NFL...

Exhibit A

Eli Manning is no Tom Brady
Manning owns a career passer rating of 80.2. Compare that too Mr Brady's 95.2, and you can see where Eli's delusions begin. I'll be the first to say passer rating isn't the ultimate guide to a successful QB, but it's still a pretty accurate way of ranking the men who throw the ball.

The system may be off a little, but there is no way Manning and his 80.2 rating is anywhere near the same category as a 95.2. Brady is widely considered the best QB in the game and one of the all-time greats, and with 3 Super Bowl rings, 2 league MVP awards and 6 Pro Bowls to his name, it's hard to disagree.

What has Manning done? 1 Super Bowl ring, 1 Pro Bowl and 2 times led the league in interceptions. Hmmm. Doesn't quite stack up does it?

Exhibit B

Some will point to Manning's Super Bowl victory as validation as one of the league's best. However, if you recall, as the 2007 season was winding down, there was considerable talk that New York was ready to head in a different direction at QB after 4 mediocre season's by Eli.

Instead, Eli stumbled through the playoffs, while the Giants relied on great defense, a solid running game, and one of the most miraculous plays in Super Bowl history. On the game winning drive, not only was Manning aided by David Tyree's miracle catch, the Giants were beneficiaries of two drive-sustaining penalties on third downs Manning was otherwise unable to convert.

Over his playoff career, Eli owns a passer rating of 77.6. Not exactly the guy you want to trust heading into the post-season. If his passer rating doesn't discourage you, take away the three games the Giants won for him during that 2007 Super Bowl run and his 4-3 playoff record becomes an abysmal 1-3.

Exhibit C

I don't know what people
see in you either Eli.
In August of 2005, the Giants made Eli Manning the richest QB in league history when they signed him to a 6 year, $97.5 million contract extension. Eli's contact has since been surpassed by both Tom Brady and older brother Peyton, but that he was ever the highest paid player is absurd.

You tell me which veteran QB you'd you rather have running your team for that price: Drew Brees, Phillip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger or Eli Manning? I can't see your hands, but I'm guessing out of a hundred people, maybe one of you raised your hand for the last guy.

Put your hand down Eli.

  1. Doxology... I love it! I couldn't agree more. The proof is in the pudding. Yes numbers aren't everything... Brett Favre never had the best numbers but he found a way to get a W. He's still the starter for the Giants because he got them a Lombardi Trophy. The Giants would have lost 9 out of 10 but they miraculously pulled it off in one of the most memorable Super Bowls in recent history (not a Pats fan). So good for him but he is definitely over paid, overrated, and I'm betting his luck has run out. Even though Eli probably won't top his career high INT record this year, I predict the Giants start looking for other options. As soon as Eli has a couple bad games, his fans and team will turn on him in a NY second.

BTW - in response to your finally question in Exhibit C: gimme Drew Brees any day. The heart of a lion and plays with an attitude like he's got something to prove!

    1. You were right. Brady sure isn't in Eli's league. Maybe one day he'll make it.

  3. Hahaha... Talk about a poor year for me to write and release that article!! You win some, you lose some. I'll own up to losing this one! Lets be honest though, Brady still has more titles and more MVP awards. Don't get too carried away on putting Eli above Brady just yet, but I'm assuming you are a Giants fan, so enjoy the victory; must feel nice.
