The Boston Red Sox sure didn't draw it up this way at the beginning of the season, but here we are on the last day of the season and the Red Sox are tied with the Tampa Bay Rays for the wild card spot in this year's playoffs.
Boston takes on the Baltimore Orioles tonight, while Tampa goes up against the New York Yankees, who have already secured their post season spot.
Imagine that. Boston will actually be cheering for the Yankees to win tonight, which begs the question...
Do the Yankees let the Rays win just to help keep the Sox out of the playoffs?
My affinity for Boston, and complete and utter loathing of the Yankees is well documented. However, could you imagine what it would do for this rivalry if the Yankees actually let the Rays win tonight and then went public with the confession?!
I'm not saying this is going to happen, but could you imagine if it did?
All of New England would take up arms, march into the New York and burn down the entire Bronx!
Red Sox owner, John Henry, would approve a $500 million dollar payroll for Theo Epstein, who would in turn sign every free agent on the market next year. That means Albert Pujols AND Prince Fielder.
With Adrian Gonzalez, Kevin Youkillis and big papi David Ortiz already manning the corners and DH spots, where would the new guys play in the field?
So they might have a terrible defense with Pujols running balls down at the pesky pole and Fielder might the green monster down after running into all season long, but who cares where they'd play, the Sox would score 15 runs a game!
What about pitching? Well, there is not much on the market this year besides CJ Wilson from Texas, but I'm sure he's going to love the five year, $150 million Theo gives him to be Boston's fourth starter next year.
In all reality, no team likes to lose a game on purpose, even if it is to the detriment of their arch rivals. So put down your muskets New Englanders and be glad your one healthy pitcher, Jon Lester, is on the mound tonight, while Tampa is up against the best team in the American League this season.
The odds are probably in your favor of making the playoffs and keeping your gun powder stored away for another season.
Then again, could you imagine if the Yankees really did let the Rays win tonight?
